I am the last person who would tell another what to wear or how to wear it, but I am curious about the human perspective. Why are young women, nowhere close to being grandmothers, drawn to the Coastal Grandmother aesthetic? Is the “Coastal Grandmother”, in fact, ageless? When I was growing up, girls were provocative and pushed modest fashion boundaries. I grew up with Christina Aguilera’s Dirrty. We were all wide-eyed when she was in the boxing ring showing off her booty cheeks, but we loved it! HAHAHA.
What am I getting at? Why are young women dressing like older, sophisticated women? You have the old money aesthetic, which again is an older sophisticated woman aesthetic, and now we are seeing the coastal grandmother gaining traction. Yes, the classic timeless wardrobe will go for years, hence the name, but I can’t believe we are all choosing to dress like coastal grandmothers, me included, haha.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the comfortable breezy fabrics, neutral color pallets, and minimal accessories, but some days I find myself thinking, “Am I too young to be dressing so …old? So mature.” I know what most of you will say in this empowering world.
Wear what makes you comfortable. Who cares what they wear?
And yes, a few of you will even reach and may suggest that what I am saying is anti-feminist, but I want to hear from those who aren’t afraid to share their perspective, the brave souls that can share their opinions, tastefully, haha.
I will say that dressing affluent and sophisticated is a vibe, but there is something about the coastal grandmother that is effortlessly chic, thus you find yourself comfortable and not like you’re putting on “airs”. The trick is getting the right fabric and fit. Make sure you’re going for natural materials and that the way the fabric lays on your body flatters your silhouette. If you do not absolutely love it, then take a pass on said outfit.
So, where do I stand on the coastal grandmother aesthetic? I am all for it. My stance is that there is no age in fashion and style. As for me, I aspire to be more coastal, especially around the coast, hahah, on vacation. I really can’t wait for our summer getaway this July with Hubby!
